Utility cycling refers not only for fitness, recreation such as cycle touring, or cycle racing, but also means of transport. This common type of cycling in the world is used in various purposes by different people such as students using cycles to go to schools or colleges, postmen using bicycles to deliver mail, delivery boys using bicycles to deliver goods or services or office-goers using bicycles to go to work etc.

Particularly in advanced countries people are also using their cycles as best mean of transport types although they have own cars or motor cycles. Thus cycling levels are not influenced just by the attractiveness of cycling alone.

Only for the most affordable means of transport, most people are using the cycles in many developing countries. Large number of cycles can be seen on the roads of the countries like Sri Lanka, North Korea, and Vietnam etc.

According to the recent surveys on utility cycling, it has found that most people in developed countries use utility cycling for short distances and 50% of the people are using their cycles to travel less than 5 km a daily and maximally around 9km. Indeed, utility cycling is the hard core of the lower middle class families. They can find it with the most affordable way to travel.
